Welcome to the 2013 International Snow Science Workshop.
The International Snow Science Workshop will be held for the first time in France from October 7th to October 11th, 2013 at the Alpexpo in Grenoble. We cordially invite you to participate in this meeting which has the goal of promoting interactions and exchanges between practitioners and researchers in the fields of snow and avalanches.
Grenoble, as the capital of the French Alps, boasts a unique mountain setting. The city, which hosted the 1968 Winter Olympics, is famous for it's many nearby ski resorts. But Grenoble is also a city open to the world and it is the second largest research-oriented city after Paris. What better place than here to illustrate the traditional ISSW motto “The merging of theory and practice?”
The workshop runs for the entire week, and the ISSW participants will leave the lecture halls for a field trip to visit the Chamonix Mont-Blanc valley which offers an exceptional look at the French avalanche programs. “Europe's roof” (4810.45 m) continues to attract millions of visitors and thousands of mountaineers every year as the third ranked most visited natural area in the world. Covering a surface area of 125 km2, glaciers are omnipresent in the Chamonix valley and contribute to the outstanding beauty of the site.
